The role of culture in local government success cannot be overstated. Recent failings in strategy execution, risk management, and service user treatment have highlighted the importance of a strong organisational culture. The principles of good risk management, sound governance, and robust internal control are fundamental to maintaining stakeholder confidence.
Today, the financial stability of local authorities is no longer guaranteed, placing public services and employment increasingly at risk. All of which means: it’s time to take action.
The problem is that this rhetoric isn’t new. For over ten years, there have been calls that the cupboard of efficiency savings is bare, and yet, here we are.
Here we share insights from our two local government reports.
Based on survey data, the 'Beyond efficiency report' looks to understand Councils' approaches to financial sustainability and risk. The annual 'local government internal audit planning report' analyses common causes for issues being identified, and makes suggestions for areas internal auditors may want to include in their annual plan to gain assurance that the root causes are being addressed.
Based on survey data (from 82 local authorities), our 'Beyond efficiency report' looks to understand how local authorities are approaching financial sustainability and risk, including what measures they are implementing, and what else they could consider.
